SAE J2534 is a standard for communications between a computer and a vehicle.
Legislation requires that Vehicle Manufacturer’s give access to independent workshops for re-flashing emissions related controllers such as PCM and TCM.
Some manufacturers allow independent workshops to use the same software as dealerships and carry out pretty much every function such as guided fault finding as well as flashing new ECU’s and re-flashing existing ECU’s.
To carry out this process workshops will need the right J2534 device, the right laptop with specifications dictated by the manufacturer, good high speed internet connection, a battery support unit, subscription to the relevant manufacturer as well as the know how to use the dealer software.
More and more workshops especially ones specialising in one or two brands are wanting to carry out this work but lack the knowledge, time and confidence to take the plunge. Manufacturer’s are not consistent with the level of access and functions they provide with some like VW Audi Group providing access to virtually everything and Ford limiting access to emissions related ECU’s and then only on vehicles with EURO5 onwards emissions standards.
